Scope & objectives

CERASAFE proposes an integrated approach to environmental health and safety (EHS) in the ceramic industry. CERASAFE will:
  1. Characterise nanoparticle release scenarios during industrial processes in this sector, and to assess exposure by addressing the release mechanisms, toxicity, and characterization of intentionally and unintentionally produced nanoparticles, as well as mitigation measures.
  2. Develop an online tool to discriminate engineered nanoceramic particles from background aerosols, innovating in the field of characterization methods relevant for EHS issues.
  3. Establish a set of Good Manufacturing and Use Practices for nanoceramic materials. Results will include risk assessment and recommendations for industry, users and stakeholders to ensure the safe production process for nanoceramic materials.

Project outcomes:

  1. A full workplace exposure assessment concerning manufacture of nanoceramic materials in at least two real-world industrial workplaces .
  2. A full workplace exposure assessment concerning application of ceramic materials in industry such as plasma projection, laser sintering, laser ablation and/or inkjet printing in at least two real-world workplaces.
  3. A full physical-chemical characterization of at least 3 types of NPs (selected among Al-doped Zn oxide, BaSO4, TiO2, ceramic pigments and silica NPs), as raw materials and also after use in industrial workplaces.
  4. Toxicological characterization of at least 3 types of nanoparticles (Al-doped Zn oxide, BaSO4, TiO2, ceramic pigments and silica NPs), as raw materials and also after use in industrial workplaces. Ranking of hazard for the tested nanoceramics.
  5. Novel tool/approach for online detection of nanoceramics in workplace air.
  6. Evaluation of the effectiveness of exposure control measures in at least 4 real-world industrial workplaces (2 manufacturing, 2 applications).
  7. Setting-up of a publicly available database on occupational exposure and toxicity, for the materials and processes evaluated.
  8. Generation of a document on Guidance on Good Manufacturing and Use Practices (GMUPs) for the safe production and use of nanoceramics.
